For years, major fast-food chains have prioritized profit over the health of Americans, as highlighted by Eric Schlosser in his book "Fast Food Nation." While convenient and affordable, fast food often lacks essential nutrients and is high in unhealthy fats, excessive sodium, and potentially harmful additives, including artificial flavors and colors. This concerning trend has contributed to the rising obesity epidemic, with junk food being one of the primary causes of obesity.

Culprits: Sugar, Fat, and Sodium

The prevalence of obesity has skyrocketed in recent decades, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting that the obesity rate in the United States has increased from 30.5% in 1999-2000 to 42.4% in 2017-2018 (CDC, 2020). The result is a menu filled with options that are not only devoid of essential nutrients but also laden with unhealthy components that can lead to weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic health issues.
